These six common mistakes might hurt the child self-confidence and limit those chances of being successful adult when they grow.

1. Don’t prevent your kids to take risks
It is completely understandable parents to be careful with their children because the modern world riddle with dangers and risk all around us. Even though this protecting nature of parents is considered normal, still you need to allow your child to grow up based on experience learned by it. There are many European studies that prove that kids who are not allowed to play with their friends outside, when they grow up they have phobias. On the other hand those kids that haven’t experienced first love and emotional heartbreak, when they grow they will be emotionally stunned when such thing occur and most probably will be immature adults that can’t sustain long term relationship. So please have in mind to let your child take risk while it is young in order to grow up as successful adult. Otherwise they will become arrogant and low in their self-esteem.

2. Let your children learn to rescue themselves
Modern times have allowed children to be more information-driven but in the same time this can make them become spoilt. Today almost all kids are getting everything served on silver platter which prevents them to develop essential life skills. Many parents are solving their children problems without knowing that this way you most probably make your kid not to be able to handle life ordeals. Allowing your kid to go through hardship and find their own way of dealing with such situation will allow him to become independent. If you continue to solve their problems you are actually taking their natural problem-solving abilities which make them dependent adults that will always seek for help.

3. Do not criticize or praise very easily
One of the essentials practices that parents have continued practicing since the 80’s is applauding your kid’s achievements. This is not a bad thing at all because you are instilling mentality of being the special one. Likewise you should also reprimand them once they do something wrong. Latest research has found that kids tend to do things that will draw praise from their parents and this way they become afraid of making mistakes. In order to avoid this you should always try to find good middle ground when it comes to praise or criticizing. This way you will prevent your kids from striving to win by any means necessary, which sometimes might be in form of cheating, exaggeration of their achievements or qualities. Furthermore such behavior might develop dishonest when they become adults.

4. Parent who wield guilt-tripping such as an all for one solution
It is completely ok if your child is disappointed with you at some point. In such cases you should not guilt-trip them with a reward in return for doing something for you. You should be able to avoid the reward of punishment system and support them in the process of understanding that success is based solely on their own actions and willpower. They should understand that these successes do not come from praises from their parents. In real life they should be prepared that reward for hard work is basically more work. Also try to make your kids experience the being intrinsically motivated and making the right decision without letting emotional blackmail in it. This way your child will become strong adult that will be prepared to challenge everything with confidence and motivation.

5. You should admit your mistakes
Every human being makes mistakes, this includes you as parent. When your child becomes teenager try to be their friend as well. Teenagers always rebel because they are seeking what adulthood is about. Do not compare your child with others if you want to avoid this, but also bear in mind that at this age they want the space to be themselves. Allow your child to be unique and to work in their comfort personal space. Those teenagers that are healthier will try to do things independently without any help. This is something that you should allow your child to do in order to make them feel the respect from you and feel like intelligent adult.

6. Practice as you preach
Many parents are saying one thing and doing the opposite. This results with serious bad feeling in your child mind. So please try to keep up your promises and transfer your words into actions. This way it will allow you to teach them that character is more important than personality and will allow them to learn to acknowledge their own, and become dependable, humble and responsible adult. We know that this sounds really hard but you have to show your kids that they need to be themselves without hiding their morals. Simply show them that real life is rewarding in regards to being selfless, strong and treating other people the right way.
