Prescription painkiller tramadol ‘claiming more lives than any other drug’

Tramadol is a prescribed drug that thousands of people are consuming on daily basis. This drug is responsible for more deaths compared to other drugs like cocaine and heroin. These claims have been confirmed by Northern Ireland pathologist’s team.

People that take these painkillers in the correct way should not be worried about any danger for their health and life, but if this drug is mixed with alcohol or other drugs it can be life threatening.

Only in 2016 there have been 33 deaths related to tramadol use, and among these deaths there were people from 16 to 70 year old.

Professor Jack Crane, a state pathologist, claims that “I don’t think that people realise how potentially risky taking tramadol is. I think it’s because it’s a prescription drug – people assume it’s safe.”

This opiate-based drug needs to be available only as prescribed drug, even though it has been classified as illegal Class C drug without prescription in 2014. Tramadol is usually prescribed for treatment of moderate and severe pain.

According to different anti-drug campaigners, tramadol is becoming more and more available for people on the black market.

Professor Jack Crane is claiming that there will be more casualties if there is no urgent action taken very quickly. He is suggesting that the black market needs to be crackdown as soon as possible.

Also he is suggesting that this drug needs to be reclassified again as class-A drug without prescription. Professor Crane is meeting again with the Chief Medical Officer in order to push further for immediate action in regards to the abuse of this prescribed drug.
